An injection-molded plastic kit of the American carrier attack aircraft A-1H (AD-6) Skyraider in 1:32 scale from Trumpeter. The package contains over 440 parts on nineteen sprues including a clear one, one photo-etched fret, rubber tires and decals. The radial engine, the wheel bays and the cockpit are all modeled; a great strength of the set is the extensive load of external stores right in the box. The finished model is roughly 369 mm long and has a span of about 477 mm, a large, substantial piece with room for detail.
The Skyraider is one of the most interesting anomalies of aviation history: a single-engine propeller attack aircraft that became famous in the jet age. It was created at the end of the Second World War, but it made its mark in Korea and above all in Vietnam. It was powered by the massive eighteen-cylinder Wright R-3350 radial and carried armament on fifteen hardpoints, on the late versions up to around 3600 kg, that is more than many a Second World War bomber could lift. It was exactly its slowness that made it a legend: it could circle over a battlefield for hours, work precisely just above the heads of friendly troops and escort rescue helicopters (the famous role with the callsign Sandy), none of which a jet could manage with its speed and fuel consumption.
Start the assembly with the engine and the cockpit, and only then close the fuselage. The radial engine deserves emphasis: a dark base, drybrushing with metal and a fine wash in the recesses. There are a lot of stores; it pays to paint them and apply the decals before fitting them. The typical finishes (gloss gray for the Navy, later flat camouflages) call for an airbrush and a smooth base; in 1:32 a panel wash and discreet shading of the plates both come out well. Glue the plastic with thin modeling cement and the photo-etched parts with super glue.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
