Stores for fighters of the 1960s and 1970s. It was precisely this version that hung under the Phantoms at the time when it first became widely apparent what guided missiles could do in combat and where their weaknesses lay. Without a model of the aircraft itself the set finds no use.
The E version brought semi-active radar guidance, in which the parent machine illuminates the target and the missile rides the reflected signal. Against its predecessors this was a fundamental advance, but the pilot had to keep the target illuminated until the hit, which prevented him from taking evasive action. It was carried by the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II and the McDonnell F3H Demon, and on the Phantoms it was recessed into semi-recessed wells on the underside of the fuselage. Experience in combat led to the modification designated E-2, adapted to shorter launch ranges.
On the Phantoms the missiles seat into fuselage wells, where there is little room for correction, so try the surfaces sanded for the fit dry. Keep the body of the missile light but tell the nose and the bands apart, or the weapon will merge with the undercarriage area of the model. The transitions between the light body and the darker segments are better masked with tape than painted freehand.
Painting materials are not included in the set.
