An add-on set of turned metal parts for the large 1:32 scale. It contains the barrels of the Hispano 20 mm cannons together with the fairings through which the barrels emerge from the leading edge of the wing. The set is cut for the Spitfire kit from Pacific Coast Models; for the Tamiya kit in the same scale the manufacturer lists a separate version, so go by which kit you are building when choosing.
The C wing, also known as the universal wing, allowed the Spitfire to be fitted with various combinations of machine guns and cannons. In the variant with two 20 mm cannons the barrels emerged from the leading edge in aerodynamic fairings, which are among the most conspicuous recognition features of these machines. In a large scale this joint is exactly where the quality of the model shows.
The barrel fairing is an open thin-walled part. In plastic it tends to be solid or merely suggested, whereas the metal replacement has a substantially thinner wall and carries the barrel exactly on the centerline. Cut the plastic fairing off along with the stub of the barrel and level the surface with a file so that the metal part seats on its whole mating face. Given the weight of metal in a large scale, epoxy is better than cyanoacrylate glue: it has a longer setting time, so you can get the fairing aligned parallel with the axis of the aircraft, and the joint stands up to stress better. Degrease before painting and use a primer for metal, otherwise the finish will come off during masking.
This is an accessory for a kit, not a standalone model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
