A double street light of an older pattern is one of the Royal Model diorama accessories in 1:35 scale. Two arms rising from a single pole give the scene urban dignity: this is how squares, embankments and the entrances of more important buildings were lit, not an ordinary side street.
Public lighting spread across Europe in the nineteenth century, first with gas and later with electricity, and cast-iron poles survived both world wars in the streets almost unchanged. In a scene a pole-mounted lamp therefore says reliably that the action takes place in a town, and it does so without the need to build a whole facade. The twin-arm version is taller and more striking than the simple variant, so it balances a composition well when larger vehicles stand in it.
Set the pole exactly upright and preferably anchor it with a pin into the base; a slender light tends to be the most vulnerable element of a finished scene. Cast iron is painted in a dark green, gray or black shade, brightened with a dry brush along the edges; suggest flaking with small rust spots at the foot of the pole, where water splashed up from the roadway. Leave the glass panes translucent and darken the inside of the lantern so that it does not look flat.
The modeler adds the paints according to their own choice.
