A kit of the German heavy anti-aircraft mounting 12.8 cm FlaK 40 Zwilling in 1:35 scale from the Takom brand. The set contains injection-molded plastic parts, photo-etched sheet and the platform on which the whole weapon is seated. The aiming mechanism is worked out so that the barrels can be depressed, raised and traversed after assembly, so the finished model is not static.
The 12.8 cm gun was among the most effective heavy anti-aircraft weapons of its day. In the twin form, designated Zwilling, two barrels shared a common mounting and crew, which markedly increased the density of fire against bomber formations flying at high altitude. Because of its weight and its demanding production, there were never many of them, and their use was concentrated above all on fixed positions, especially on the concrete flak towers of the large German and Austrian cities. It was there that these weapons formed the core of the defense against air raids.
Build the mounting and the platform first, and only then attach the barrels to them, because otherwise the alignment is harder to check. Do not glue the movable bearings up; just seat the joints lightly. The large gray areas of the platform suit a graded coat and a fine texture, so that they do not look empty. The weapon itself looks good with dark traces on the barrels and a hint of metallic sheen in the places where the paint would be worn away by the crew. The model deserves a base, because the height of the assembly is considerable.
It is an unglued and unpainted kit, and your own supply of glue, paints and abrasive will come in useful to finish it.
