Tamiya 1:48 Fairey Swordfish Mk.II: a plastic kit of the British carrier biplane nicknamed Stringbag, with a faithful fabric surface, folding wings, three crew figures and decals for three machines.
Responsibility details are not available.
An injection-molded plastic kit of the British carrier-borne biplane Fairey Swordfish Mk.II in 1:48 scale from the Japanese maker Tamiya. The kit is typical Tamiya: precise fit, a finely rendered texture of fabric over the framework, a detailed cockpit interior and the option of building the model with folded wings. The box holds three crew figures, decals for three machines and the accessories that match the Mk.II version: unguided rockets, a radar aerial array, smoke floats, a long-range fuel tank and RATO booster rockets.
The Fairey Swordfish was a British carrier-borne torpedo bomber, a fabric-covered biplane, and therefore a machine that was technically obsolete already at the start of the Second World War. Its crews nicknamed it Stringbag. Even so it has two of the most famous successes of naval aviation to its credit: the night attack on the Italian fleet at Taranto in 1940, which among other things inspired Japanese planners before the attack on Pearl Harbor, and above all the strike on the battleship Bismarck in May 1941, when a torpedo dropped by a Swordfish from the carrier Ark Royal damaged the rudder of the Bismarck, crippled her steering and allowed the British fleet to catch and sink her. An obsolete biplane thus decided the fate of one of the most modern battleships in the world. One fair clarification: those actions were flown by the earlier Mk.I machines. The Mk.II arrived only in 1943: it received a metal-covered lower wing, which allowed unguided rockets to be fired, and made its name above all in anti-submarine warfare from the decks of escort carriers.
Let us be honest: a biplane means rigging, and that is the most demanding part of the build. Plan for it in advance: the bracing wires are best made from drawn sprue, fine fishing line or elastic thread, anchored in pre-drilled holes and fixed with cyanoacrylate glue. Ideally paint and weather the whole model before you hang the upper wing, because once the rigging is in place you can no longer reach the lower surfaces. The manufacturer also offers a separate photo-etched set of bracing parts for this aircraft, which makes the job considerably easier. The fabric surfaces positively ask for the ribs to be picked out in a darker shade, sprayed lightly through a template or from a low angle. Apply a gloss coat before the decals.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
Excelente maqueta, bien moldeada, exquisitos detalles, texturas hermosas. He comprado el detallado de Tamiya para completar la ccelosía de las alas. Estoy seguro que la construcción va a ser entretenida y fluida. 5/5.
