1:35 German Building Ruin is a diorama backdrop from the Italian brand Royal Model: the facade of a wrecked brick house cast in plaster. It is not a model of a vehicle or a figure but the setting into which the equipment and the figures are yet to come.
The built-up areas of German towns took a battering in the last year of the Second World War from artillery, air raids and street fighting alike. A typical townhouse had brick walls covered with render, wooden floors and tall windows; after a hit, exactly this picture was left of it, that is a standing piece of facade with exposed lintels, fallen render and a heap of rubble at the foot. Walls like these served the defenders as a firing position and the attackers as an obstacle that had to be worked around or shot through.
The casting can be shortened with an ordinary hacksaw, and a break looks more convincing than a straight cut edge. The surface is absorbent, so it pays to soak it first with heavily thinned acrylic paint and only then spray the primer. The bricks stand out with a dry brush, a dark wash brings out the joints and the corners, and final pigments add a limey dustiness.
The casting is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glues and paints are not in the package.
