About product

Leopard 2 A4 in 1:35 scale, a Meng kit

An injection-molded plastic kit of the Leopard 2 A4 main battle tank in 1:35 scale from Meng. The kit aims at the more demanding builder: the tracks are made as individual movable links that can be joined without glue (a jig for assembling them is in the package), and there is no rubber track option. Also enclosed are photo-etched parts (the meshes of the ventilation boxes, frames and grilles over the engine), clear parts for the lights, periscopes and optics, and self-adhesive film for the mirrors. The running gear has working torsion bar suspension. Optional parts make it possible to build machines from different production batches, which differ in hatches, in the rear of the engine compartment and in the shape of the side skirts. The decals keep to Bundeswehr vehicles. If you are looking for a simpler route and a richer choice of national markings, the Leopard 2A4 from Revell in its anniversary edition has vinyl tracks and decals for more armies, but less detail.

The real subject

The Leopard 2 is a modern main battle tank developed in the 1970s and introduced from the end of that decade, and it is a different league from the older Leopard 1. Where the Leopard 1 relied on speed and light armor, the Leopard 2 got composite armor and a 120 mm smoothbore gun. The A4 version is the most widespread Cold War form of the machine: an angular turret with a flat, heavily armored front. It was the A4 that then spread across Europe and beyond and served with a number of armies, making it one of the most widespread Western tanks of its era.

Building and painting tips

The running gear and the wheels first, and only then close the hull up. Set time aside for the individual track links: assemble them in longer runs on a flat surface, clean the parts carefully and keep checking that the track is not twisting. Glue with thin cement for plastic, bend the photo-etched parts over a steel rule and glue them with super glue. Apply a primer before painting; spray the NATO three-tone with an airbrush and soft transitions. Weathering: a dark wash into the gaps and the scribed lines, dust and mud pigments on the running gear and the lower areas, fine chipping on the edges.

Who the model is for

  • More experienced modelers who want maximum detail on a modern ground vehicle
  • Fans of the Bundeswehr and of Cold War NATO vehicles
  • Builders who do not mind individual track links, or who enjoy them
  • Collectors who want to build the Leopard 2 next to the older Leopard 1

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The Meng kit is more detailed and more demanding: it has individual movable track links, photo-etched parts, working torsion bar suspension and optional parts for different production batches, and the decals keep to the Bundeswehr. The Revell anniversary edition is simpler, with vinyl tracks and a smaller number of parts, but with a markedly richer decal sheet offering several national options plus an anniversary finish.

No. They are two generations. The Leopard 1 is a machine of the 1960s, lighter, faster, with a 105 mm gun and thinner armor. The Leopard 2 is a modern main battle tank with composite armor and a 120 mm smoothbore gun; the A4 is its most widespread Cold War version, with an angular turret.

Rather not. The individual track links and the photo-etched parts call for patience and experience. A beginner will get on better with a kit with rubber tracks and a lower part count.

Yes, the links are designed to snap together and stay movable, and a jig for assembling them is in the package. Even so we recommend assembling them in runs on a flat surface.
