1:35 US Army M54A2 GUNTRUCK (Vietnam War) is a kit of the American five-ton truck converted into an armed escort vehicle.
Responsibility details are not available.
This set in 1:35 scale from AFV Club covers the American army M54A2 five-ton truck converted into a so-called gun truck, that is an improvised armored vehicle for protecting convoys. Its connection with the war in Vietnam is stated directly in the name of the item.
Supply columns on the roads of South Vietnam faced ambushes from very close range and an escort of armored personnel carriers was not enough. Drivers and mechanics therefore began welding steel plates onto the beds of the five-tonners, stacking sandbags and building mounts for heavy machine guns and rapid-firing weapons. Every vehicle was one of a kind, down to its own name painted on the sides. The chassis with drive to all wheels and the multifuel engine of the A2 variant carried that load, so it became the most common basis for conversions of this kind.
The cab and the armored body make up two separate units that it makes sense to paint separately and to join only at the end. The olive base color comes alive with a lighter touch on the edges of the plates. Vehicles in the field were heavily worn: chipped paint, corrosion along the welds, rusty water running down the rivets and reddish dusty soil on the tires.
It is a kit to build yourself; the glue and paints needed are not included in the box.
