This item is neither a model nor a paint. It is a stencil from the Spanish brand Vallejo: a sheet with cut-out motifs through which paint is applied with an airbrush, a brush or a sponge. The theme corresponds to the advertising lettering and signs of period car repair shops and filling stations, that is the features that give a backdrop and a story to a scene with equipment in 1:35 scale.
An empty wall of plaster or brick is visually dead. Painted advertising is the simplest way to give it a period identity and a color accent without having to add further objects. Compared with glued-on paper or decal lettering, a sprayed motif has a fundamental advantage: it follows the texture of the surface. The paint catches on the raised places and reaches less into the recesses, so the lettering looks as if it really were painted onto a rough wall.
First finish the wall including the base coat and let it cure. Press the stencil down and hold it with tape; on an uneven surface press it down with your fingers step by step. Spray perpendicular, with very thin paint and in several light coats, as a single thick coat will run under the edge. Never make the lettering fully opaque; advertising on an old wall is always faded. You will complete the effect of age by carefully going over the finished motif with the tone of the wall or by adding vertical traces left by rain. Clean the stencil immediately after use so that it stays usable for the next scene as well.
A stencil is an aid for painting. Paints, thinner and diorama material are not included in the package. Ventilate while spraying.
