A set of medium-sized wooden barrels in 1:35 scale from MiniArt. It is not a model of a vehicle or a kit of a piece of equipment but an accessory used to fill the scene around the main model: the load bed of a truck, the corner of a warehouse, a yard or a marketplace. The designation medium size matters, because the manufacturer keeps the barrels in several size ranges and you can choose among them according to how large a space you want to fill and what the scene is meant to tell. The barrels are plastic parts intended to be glued and painted.
Barrels are among the most universal scenic elements there are. They work in civilian and military scenes alike, in farm buildings, by a workshop, at a railroad station and on the bed of a truck. A set of this kind makes sense above all where you need to break up an empty stretch of base and give the scene scale and depth. Since the series is also offered in other sizes, several types can be combined in one scene to give a more natural, less uniform look.
Nip the parts off with cutters and glue the joints with a liquid plastic cement, which runs into the gap and does not clog the engraved wood texture. Spray the base with a primer and paint so that no two barrels look the same: a different shade of base color, a different degree of wear. The wood texture comes alive with a thinned dark wash that runs into the engraved lines and with light drybrushing in a lighter color along the edges of the staves. Pick out the metal hoops in a metallic shade and add a hint of rust; on barrels standing on the ground it pays to dust the lower part with a pigment matching the color of the terrain.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
