A plastic kit of the Type 039 Song class submarine in 1:350 scale from Hobby Boss - a compact model of a diesel-electric attack submarine of the PLA Navy.
Responsibility details are not available.
An injection-molded plastic kit of the Type 039 submarine, known as the Song class, in 1:350 scale. The manufacturer is the Chinese company Hobby Boss. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. With submarines, 1:350 scale has the pleasant property that the finished model stays manageable in size and combines well with surface ships of the same scale in one display case.
The Type 039 is a diesel-electric attack submarine of the PLA Navy, that is a boat with conventional propulsion rather than a nuclear reactor. It is characterized by a teardrop hull form optimized for running submerged and by a tall, slender sail. It is a Chinese design of the end of the twentieth century which within its class went through several building batches differing in the shape of the sail and in the details of the superstructure.
With submarines the result stands or falls on two things: the hull seam and the smoothness of the surface. Fit the hull halves dry first, level any step, fill the joint and sand it through several grits to a smooth, glossy surface, because every scratch shows on a dark finish. Before painting, apply a filler primer, which reveals any remaining sanding marks while something can still be done about them. Apply the paint with an airbrush in thin coats, otherwise the fine engraving will disappear. More interesting than a flat black monolith is a slightly modulated surface, with panels and strips a shade lighter or darker within the same color. If you build the model with the full hull, count on a stand; for a waterline build a flat board comes in handy as a base for imitating the water.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
