A set of die-cut masks for a model of the Japanese Type 99 bomber in 1:48 scale. The cut allows for the sliding part of the canopy being pulled back. Wheels are not included.
Responsibility details are not available.
An open canopy changes the masking job from the ground up. Once the sliding part has moved back it is no longer seen only from the outside, and the viewer looks at its inner face as well. The frames therefore have to be painted on both sides, and the stencil has to exist in two mirrored forms for each part. This sheet is cut for exactly that case.
The extent is narrower than in the sister set for the closed canopy. Only the glazing is dealt with here; wheels are not in the package, so anyone who needs them has to get them separately or choose the other set. Inside you will find self-adhesive stencils die-cut to their final shape and ready to peel off, with no need for scissors or a knife.
The interior comes first. The frames are painted in the cockpit color, and only then is the part turned over and masked from the outside for the upper shade of the airframe. Between the two steps the coat has to be allowed to cure properly, or the second stencil will pull the first coat off. It is best to start removing them from a corner and to pull at a shallow angle along the edge of the frame.
This is the Japanese carrier-based dive bomber designated Type 99, known among the Allies as the Val. Machines of this kind sank more Allied warships during the war than any other enemy dive bomber, and their long greenhouse canopy with the rear section slid back is one of the most characteristic features of the whole type.
The aircraft model and the paints for it are not sold together with the sheet.
