Plastic kit of the British airfield tanker vehicle Albion in 1:48 scale from Airfix. An accessory for aircraft models and for dioramas of airfield operations.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Albion was one of the airfield vehicles of British aviation whose job was to bring fuel right up to the aircraft standing on the field. It was a truck chassis with a tank and pumping equipment, that is, the kind of machine no operational base could do without, even though in photographs it usually stays in the background behind the aircraft. The designation refers to the layout of the dispensing part of the vehicle.
It is precisely that unobtrusiveness that makes airfield vehicles such a rewarding accessory. An aircraft model built on its own is a display piece, but the moment a tanker stands beside it, a scene with relationships and scale appears that the viewer reads quite differently. Airfield equipment often does more for the overall impression than another aircraft model would.
This is a polystyrene kit in 1:48 scale. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; the parts are separated from the sprues and glued with modeling cement for plastic. The scale matches ordinary 1:48 aircraft kits, so the vehicle can be placed beside them without further work.
On a vehicle with the large smooth surfaces of a tank it pays to clean up the joints carefully, otherwise they show after spraying. It is practical to paint the chassis and the underside of the frame before the body is seated in place. Service wear, dust on the wheels and traces left by the hoses give the finished model a credibility that a clean coat of paint alone does not have.
The box holds no paints, glue, tools or aircraft model, unless stated otherwise.
