The Kaman HH-43 Huskie rescue helicopter in 1:48 scale from AMP: a plastic kit of a machine with intermeshing rotors and no tail rotor.
Responsibility details are not available.
This kit from AMP works up one of the strangest shapes that appeared in postwar aviation. It is short-run injection-molded plastic; the extent of the package is not stated here, so count on the standard preparation of the parts and on a dry fit before gluing.
Kaman built the Huskie around a pair of intermeshing rotors turning against each other. The torque reaction cancels itself out that way, so the machine needs no tail rotor and the tail section carries only stabilizing surfaces. The US Air Force deployed it above all to rescue crews around airfields and for firefighting, because the stream of air from the rotors could drive the flames back and open a way to the fuselage of a crashed aircraft. Later it also served to pick up downed airmen, and among crews it earned a nickname of its own.
The most delicate point is the fit of the rotor heads. Check the angles of the blades dry beforehand and glue them only once the base has dried. The cockpit glazing is extensive, so careful masking and a clean transition of the frames pay off. Rescue machines tended to be heavily worn, so weathering from the exhausts and traces of firefighting foam will do the model more good than a perfectly smooth finish.
Supplied as an unassembled kit; paints and glue are not in the package, unless stated otherwise.
