Foreign operators of the North American P-51D fighter are the subject of the second part of this decal series in 1:48 scale from Xtradecal. The sheet is tied to the form with a bubble canopy and is bought separately from a model.
The P-51D is the best known form of the Mustang: a cut-down fuselage spine, an all-round bubble canopy and six 12.7 mm machine guns. Thanks to its great range it escorted bombers all the way over Germany and became a symbol of Allied air superiority. After 1945, however, its career was far from over. Cheap surplus machines were taken up by a whole range of air arms in Europe, Latin America, Asia and the Pacific, and some of them operated the type as late as the 1960s and 1970s, when jet fighters had long been flying supersonically. The color schemes of these machines tend to be markedly more varied than the sober metal shine of the American fighters.
A bare metal surface is sprayed very thinly and tolerates only a perfectly smooth base, because even a small scratch then shows. The gloss created by metallic paint suits decals, but clear-coat the area under them all the same. At the end, unify the surface with a fine satin varnish so that the films do not shine.
