About product

Lockheed P-38 F/G Lightning 1:48, Tamiya

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:48 scale from Japan's Tamiya, from modern tooling introduced in 2019. The kit depicts the early F and G versions, so the package holds two different turbocharger shapes to tell the two sub-versions apart, as well as nose weight against sitting on the tail, masking templates for the glazing and decals for two machines: a P-38F from a unit used in New Guinea with a painted shark mouth and a P-38G from the squadron that took part in the action against the transport aircraft carrying Admiral Yamamoto. Chrome decals for small details and a color painting guide are enclosed as well.

The real subject

The P-38 Lightning was a twin-engine twin-boom fighter with the cockpit in a short central nacelle; thanks to its unmistakable silhouette it earned the nickname fork-tailed devil. Mind the choice of version: the F and G are early machines and can be told from the later J and L at a glance. The early versions have slim, smooth engine nacelles, because the charge air intercoolers were hidden in the leading edge of the wing. The J and L versions were given a new intercooler moved under the engine, between the oil coolers, which created the characteristic deep chin under the propeller. Anyone who wants to build a late Lightning needs a different kit, and the other way round. The most famous action of the type was flown on the early versions as well: in April 1943 G-version machines flew hundreds of kilometers over the Pacific to intercept the aircraft carrying Admiral Yamamoto.

Building and painting tips

The kit is among the most technically refined in 1:48 scale and is buildable even for less experienced modelers; the parts fit and the seams fall under the engine nacelles. Glue with thin cement for plastic. Do not forget the nose weight, or the model with its nose gear will sit on its tail. The basic scheme is olive drab and neutral gray, which suits an airbrush and a first coat of primer. The metal surfaces of the engine nacelles and the propeller spinners come out after polishing and light weathering.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of American Second World War fighters in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who want exactly the early F/G versions, not the late J/L
  • Anyone interested in the Pacific war and New Guinea
  • Beginning as well as advanced modelers; the kit is buildable straight from the box

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The early F and G have slim, smooth engine nacelles, because the intercoolers were in the leading edge of the wing. The J and L versions have the intercooler moved under the engine, between the oil coolers, which created a conspicuous deep chin under the propeller. You cannot build a late version from this kit.

Yes. The kit contains two different turbocharger shapes to tell the two sub-versions apart and decals for two machines, one in the F version and one in the G version.

Yes. The tooling is modern, the parts fit and the model builds well straight from the box. Just do not forget to put in the supplied nose weight.

One of the two markings supplied belongs to the squadron that took part in that action of April 1943. It was flown by machines of the early G version.
