A set from the Polish brand MASTER for modelers building the Swedish SAAB 37 Viggen aircraft in 1:48 scale. According to the name it holds pitot tubes and an angle-of-attack sensor probe, that is parts that are fitted to exposed places on the nose of a model and are the most visible of all. The number of pieces in the package is stated on the packaging of the set.
Combining metal and plastic parts calls for a different technology. Metal is not glued with cement for plastic but with super glue or epoxy, and before painting it needs a different base. The reward is detail that no mold can give: an opening at the front of the tube, a constant diameter along its whole length, a sharp transition between the steps and a perfectly straight axis. The practical gain matters just as much. On large models the probes on the nose are the first thing to bend or break off when the model is carried to a display case or a competition table.
Choose the order: first finish the airframe, varnish it, apply the decals and overcoat, and only then drill and glue the metal. Drill the holes with a micro drill bit in small steps and keep trying the fit dry. It is more convenient to paint the metal parts before gluing them in, since they can be held by the pin. The procedure is always the same: degrease with alcohol, primer for metal, then the covering shade. An alternative is to leave the metal in its natural state and merely darken it with a bluing solution, which looks very natural on probes. The metal parts combine well with photo-etched accessories, which are bonded with the same chemistry.
