1:48 SUU-16A – a gun pod with a closed bay by Reskit. One 3D-printed store for the wing racks of the Phantom II in its C and D versions.
Responsibility details are not available.
Reskit makes this store by 3D printing, a technology that carries the paneling and the fine shapes of the casing over faithfully. In the package you will find one pod in the configuration with the weapon bay closed, ready to be hung on a wing rack. The smooth treatment is ideal for a machine captured in flying condition. Reckon with the fact that this is an armament accessory, not an aircraft model.
The SUU-16/A pod came about in the nineteen-sixties as a quick answer to a bitter experience from Vietnam: the early Phantoms lacked a built-in gun and in close maneuvering combat an onboard weapon was sorely missed. The casing therefore holds a six-barrel 20 mm rotary cannon and was hung precisely under the F-4C and F-4D versions, to which it gave back the ability to fire at close range.
Cut the printing supports off a little above the surface and true the remainder with fine abrasive paper, so as not to damage the detail around it. Use super glue for mounting and try the position on the rack dry. The coloring of stores differed between units, so reach for period photographs of the particular machine before spraying.
