This injection-molded plastic kit captures the two-seat version of the Convair F-106 Delta Dart interceptor. The B model is a combat-capable trainer with an extended canopy for two men in tandem. In 1:48 scale, the pure delta wing makes for a very impressive model. The manufacturer is Trumpeter.
The F-106 was developed from the F-102 Delta Dagger as the so-called ultimate interceptor of American air defense. It was powered by a single afterburning turbojet, which gave the very slender delta-winged fuselage performance well into the supersonic range. The aircraft carried its armament in an internal weapons bay, so the surface of the airframe stayed aerodynamically clean, and guidance was handled by an onboard fire control system tied into the ground network. It entered service at the end of the 1950s and stayed with air defense squadrons for decades. The F-106B is told apart from the single-seat A by exactly that second cockpit under the extended canopy.
The long canopy is the highlight of the model, so polish it and mask the frames with tape. Finish the two-man cockpit before you glue the fuselage together. Sand and polish the seams on the long delta wing, because the typical silver and glossy surfaces bring out every scratch. Apply the metallic shades with an airbrush over a smooth dark base at the very end of the build, because they are hard to mask. Lay the decals with their bold squadron markings onto a gloss coat.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
