The Grumman F9F-2P Panther of the US Navy, 1:48 scale is an injection-molded plastic kit of the reconnaissance version of Grumman's first jet fighter, from Trumpeter.
Responsibility details are not available.
A plastic kit of the carrier-borne jet aircraft in the F9F-2P version, that is, in its unarmed photo-reconnaissance form. Trumpeter has the Panther covered in several releases according to version, so alongside the fighter form this less usual reconnaissance one can be built too. The straight wing with its wingtip tanks and the squat fuselage make the model in 1:48 scale a compact piece for the display case.
The Panther was Grumman's first jet aircraft and one of the first jet types the US Navy operated from the decks of aircraft carriers. Over Korea it flew a large share of the combat missions and became a symbol of naval aviation's move into the jet era. The version with the letter P was created by conversion to photo-reconnaissance: it lost its cannon armament and in its place received a camera installation in the nose, served by windows in the lower part of the fuselage. Photography for the planning of strikes was among the most valuable tasks of all over Korea.
Do not forget the camera windows in the nose; they are the main recognition feature of the version and are worth careful cleanup. The air intake and the duct are easier to sand before the fuselage is closed up, as a brush will no longer reach in there once it is glued. The uniform dark blue naval scheme calls for a smooth base and will take only light shading of the panels, otherwise the model loses its clean look.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
