About product

The 30.5 cm siege mortar in 1:72 scale

This is a complete resin kit, that is a model made up of castings rather than of injection-molded plastic. Resin takes finer engraving than a mold, so rivets, cast textures and small fittings can be rendered on it more crisply, but it is more brittle and calls for a different way of working. The subject is the Austro-Hungarian heavy siege mortar of 30.5 centimeter caliber, a weapon whose only task was to break through the concrete of fortification works.

The real subject

The mortar was created at the arms works in Pilsen and entered service shortly before the First World War. It fired on a steep arc, so that the round came down from above, where the roofs of a fortification were at their most vulnerable. The weapon was transported broken down into several parts and was put together at the firing position on a concrete or wooden bed. Austro-Hungarian batteries with these mortars took part in 1914 in smashing the Belgian forts, where it turned out that permanent fortification could not stand up to such a caliber.

Building and painting tips

First wash the resin parts in lukewarm soapy water so that any mold release residue disappears. Cut off the casting blocks with a saw and level the surfaces with a file; do the work in a ventilated room and protect your airways. Glue with super glue, as cement for plastic does not work on resin. Apply a primer before painting. Assemble the barrel and the bed dry and check that everything is upright: on a piece this tall an error at the base shows up several times over at the top.

Who the model is for

  • For modelers of First World War artillery.
  • For anyone interested in Austro-Hungarian and Czech arms production.
  • For experienced modelers who have already worked with resin.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a complete resin kit. The parts are glued with super glue and a primer is needed before painting.

For destroying permanent fortification. It fired on a steep arc, so that the round came down from above onto the roofs of the fort, which were at their most vulnerable.

Rather not. Resin is more brittle than plastic, calls for a different glue and makes it necessary to protect your airways when sanding.
