Responsibility details are not available.
The de Havilland DH.88 Comet is a British twin-engine racing aircraft of the mid-1930s. It was created specifically for the long-distance race from England to Australia in 1934, and three machines were built for the occasion. The winner was the aircraft nicknamed Grosvenor House, which covered the route in a little under three days. The Comet had a wooden structure, a slender fuselage, a thin wing, retractable landing gear and a pair of inline six-cylinder engines. It is among the most elegant aircraft of its day, and its aerodynamic solutions pointed the way to the fast wooden designs that followed.
This is a plastic kit in 1:72 scale meant to be glued and painted. The model is supplied unassembled; the individual parts have to be separated from the sprues, cleaned up and joined with cement for polystyrene.
The real aircraft had a smooth wooden skin with no rivets and no panel gaps, so the resulting surface calls for careful sanding of the joints and a gloss coat. The winning machine wore a bold single-color red with contrasting registration letters, which puts the emphasis on an even coat and a clean base. The recommended sequence is to build the cockpit and the wheel bays before closing up the fuselage.
The kit will please anyone interested in interwar racing and record-breaking aircraft as well as modelers looking for a clean-lined model without complicated armament. Paints, glue and other equipment are not included, unless stated otherwise.
