About product

Douglas X-3 Stiletto 1:72 (Kovozavody Prostejov, Hi-tech)

An injection-molded plastic kit of the American experimental aircraft Douglas X-3 Stiletto in 1:72 scale from the Czech manufacturer Kovozavody Prostejov. It is a limited edition Hi-tech release that adds 3D-printed parts to the plastic (the seat and the wheels, for instance), self-adhesive masks for the glazing and a decal sheet for several schemes.

The real subject

The Douglas X-3 Stiletto was an American experimental jet aircraft of the 1950s from Douglas Aircraft Company. It stood out for its extremely slender fuselage and the long pointed nose that earned it the nickname stiletto, a dagger. Its task was to study the behavior of the airframe and of materials during sustained high-speed flight, and titanium was used extensively in the structure. In practice the X-3 was underpowered and never reached the speeds planned for it, yet it delivered valuable data on the aerodynamics of slender wings and contributed to the development of later aircraft. A single example was built and is a museum exhibit today.

Building and painting tips

Assemble and paint the cockpit with its 3D-printed seat carefully, then mask the glazing with the enclosed masks. Separate the 3D-printed parts from their supports carefully and glue them with cyanoacrylate. Glue the plastic with thin liquid cement and even the surface out with primer. The characteristic finish is overall white with prominent markings, and on a smooth white surface a good primer and even airbrush work pay off. Keep the weathering restrained, since this was a clean test aircraft; gentle panel transitions will do more.

Who the model is for

  • Fans of the experimental and record-breaking X-series aircraft
  • Collectors of unusual prototypes in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who appreciate 3D-printed parts and masks in a Hi-tech edition
  • Builders with a taste for striking futuristic shapes

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
