A photo-etched metal fret with a railing that has two horizontal strands with a realistic sag running between the stanchions. The double-stranded version corresponds to the lower railings used on real ships on walkways, catwalks, around projections of the superstructure and in places where a full three-stranded railing is not needed. The set is intended for models of ships in 1:700 scale and is universal, so you cut the length you need according to your particular model.
In 1:700 scale the railing is an element that decides the final impression of a model more than most other details. Injection-molded plastic cannot be molded thin enough, so a molded railing comes across as a wall. Photo-etched metal with a thickness in hundredths of a millimeter comes close to the real proportion and almost disappears when seen from the side, exactly as on the real subject. The sag of the strands moreover breaks up machine-straight lines and visually livens the model up. The double-stranded variant is often combined with the three-stranded one on a single model according to where each height of railing belongs.
Separate the strip with a sharp scalpel against a glass or metal surface. Bend the stanchions over the edge of a steel ruler, ideally in a photo-etch bending tool. For gluing use cyanoacrylate glue in a tiny amount, applied with a pin or a drawn-out wire, so that the glue does not run between the strands. Degrease the metal with alcohol before painting and apply a primer intended for metal. Spray the paint with an airbrush from both sides in thin coats, so that the gaps between the strands are not clogged. A weak dark wash at the end accents the stanchions.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and the model of the ship itself are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
