The injection-molded kit 1:72 Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat from Airfix captures the US Navy carrier fighter of the first years of the war in the Pacific.
Responsibility details are not available.
Under this designation Airfix offers a modern tooling of the Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat carrier fighter. The moldings are finely engraved, the parts fit without major adjustment and the whole build is manageable even for someone who is only starting out with military aircraft in this size. The finished piece will complete any display case devoted to the war in the Pacific.
At the start of the war the Wildcat was the main carrier fighter of the US Navy and the Marine Corps. A stubby fuselage, a narrow main landing gear track and its hand-cranked retraction mechanism were among the recognition features of the type. The F4F-4 version brought folding wings for denser stowage on a carrier deck and six heavy machine guns. It was with this version that American crews met Japanese fighters at the Coral Sea, at Midway and over Guadalcanal, where they helped themselves with the team tactics of mutual cover.
Finish and shade the cockpit first, and only then close up the fuselage. The blue-gray and light gray shades of the US Navy come out well after a filler has been applied and the centers of the panels lightened slightly. Bring out the radial engine with its exhaust ring using a dark wash shade, and leave the landing gear legs until the end so that they are not broken off while handling the model.
The model is sold unassembled and unpainted. The equipment for building and painting is not included in the box, unless stated otherwise.
