About product

Percival P.50 Sea Prince C.1 (Royal Navy) 1:72, Valom

A kit in 1:72 scale of the Percival Sea Prince C.1, the naval liaison and transport version of the British twin-engined Prince. The model is made by Valom, a Czech manufacturer that has long concentrated on exactly this kind of subject, namely airplanes that the big brands never tooled. For collectors of British aviation it means that the subject is available at all, since otherwise it is to be found only in vacuum-formed or resin sets. The model is supplied as a set of parts to be assembled and painted, and the package contents and the number of schemes are stated on the box.

The real subject

The Percival Prince was a twin-engined high-wing monoplane with radial piston engines, a glazed nose and nose gear, developed as a light transport and utility airplane. The naval derivative Sea Prince served with the Royal Navy: the C.1 version was a liaison and transport machine, that is an airplane for carrying people and urgent materiel between bases, while the training versions of the same family served to train crews. The airplanes were notable for a roomy cabin and good visibility from the pilot's position.

Building and painting tips

Kits of this kind are what is called short-run: the parts have heavier sprue gates and it is advisable to dry-fit the joints and sand them to fit before gluing. The cabin interior is visible through the glazed nose, so it pays to pick it out with a brush and to add seat belts. Mask the glazing and spray the frames with the interior shade first. Apply a primer before painting, which will reveal any imperfections in the joints. Spray gloss varnish under the decals, then unify the surface with a matte or satin one. Pick out the panel lines with a restrained wash, mainly on the underside of the fuselage and around the engine nacelles.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of British naval aviation
  • More experienced modelers with experience of short-run kits
  • Those interested in transport and liaison airplanes
  • Builders who appreciate a kit from a small specialist manufacturer

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

Rather not. This is a short-run kit, where you have to count on sanding the joints to fit and on careful preparation of the parts before gluing.

The exact package contents are stated on the box. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
