An injection-molded plastic kit of the two-seat Russian multirole fighter Sukhoi Su-30SM in 1:72 scale from Zvezda. The set has 385 parts, the finished model measures 31.4 cm, the decals cover five machines and the box also holds stores and two pilot figures. It is a classic glue-together kit, not a snap-fit model.
Watch the scale: 1:72 is the SMALLER one. The model will be markedly smaller than a Su-30SM kit in 1:48 scale, which would be roughly half again as long. On the other hand, 1:72 fits easily into a display case and collects less dust. If you want a large model with the maximum of detail and you have the room, the 1:48 version from Great Wall Hobby exists as well. It is the same aircraft; only the scale and the maker differ.
The Su-30SM is a two-seat (tandem layout) twin-engine heavy multirole fighter of the Su-27 family, intended for the Russian Air Force. It has forward canards and engines with thrust vectoring; the swiveling nozzles together with the canards give the aircraft its famous agility. It first flew in 2012, carries a phased array radar and is intended both for the fight for air superiority and for attacks on ground and surface targets. Do not confuse it with the Su-30MKK, because that export version for China has neither canards nor thrust vectoring.
The kit is glued, so use thin liquid cement for plastic. A smaller scale means smaller parts, so a sharp blade, tweezers and a steady hand all pay off. Finish the interiors of both cockpits and the pilot figures before you close the canopy. Lay down a primer before painting and apply the modern Russian gray-blue camouflage with an airbrush in thin coats. Paint the generous stores separately and hang them last. Lay the decals on a gloss coat, set them with a decal softener and unify the surface with a matte coat, because in 1:72 decal silvering shows up especially easily.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
