A printed three-dimensional sheet for the cockpit of the Lockheed U-2C Dragon Lady high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft in 1:72 scale. It covers the densely packed instrument panel, the side consoles and the straps. Adapted to the HobbyBoss kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Lockheed U-2 was created as a machine meant to photograph from altitudes out of reach of the fighters of the day. The U-2C version received a more powerful engine and pushed the ceiling higher still, into a band where the pilot had to sit in a pressure suit and where the sky overhead is already dark blue. The span was reminiscent of a glider, the landing was managed without conventional landing gear under the wing and a chase car called out the height above the runway to the pilot by radio.
The station is packed with instruments from edge to edge, and among them sits a circular viewport for observing the terrain below the aircraft. Painting that density by hand means working with dots the size of a grain of dust. A three-dimensional sheet solves it by printing: every dial has its own outline, face and light scale, and a visible gap stays between neighbors.
The cockpit of this aircraft is fairly small and an open canopy on a model tends to be the only place a viewer looks into. The difference between a gray surface and a surface with legible instruments therefore decides the impression of the whole build. Light harness webbing and colored levers add depth on top of that, which the shade of the walls alone cannot create.
The shape matches the cockpit of the kit from HobbyBoss, and the aircraft itself is not included.
