A ruined wall is a rewarding subject. It gives a scene a background, a difference in height and above all a reason why a figure is standing exactly where it is. A model on a bare board looks like a sample, whereas the same figure leaning against the corner of damaged masonry is already telling something. The base also determines the viewer's line of sight, because you will naturally turn toward it the side of the model you want to show.
