69 Granite grey

Revell Email Color 69 Granite Grey, matte enamel paint 14 ml

Shade 69 is a synthetic enamel paint on a solvent base (not an acrylic) with a matte surface, matching the shade RAL 7026. The package holds 14 ml. It is thinned with Revell Color Mix or with mineral spirits, never with water. It is applied with a brush as well as with an airbrush and does not damage the surface of plastic parts. Note that this is a modeling paint, not a kit.

How 69 differs from the other grays

Granite gray is the darker, stonier one of the commonly used grays. It does not have the green cast of shade 67, nor the lightness of the stone gray 75. It is a tone you immediately associate with stone, concrete, paving and weathered metal. On a model it works as a dark foundation that you then lighten, not as a final surface that is meant to shine.

Use

• Dioramas: stone, rock, concrete, paving, curbs, low walls.
• Military vehicles and chassis: a dark base coat under dust and mud.
• Weathered metal surfaces, armor, tracks, rails, cast iron elements.
• A dark base for drybrushing with lighter grays.

Painting tips

It is precisely on grays that preshading and modulation work superbly: darker at the edges of panels and in the joints, lighter in the middle of an area. With stone and concrete proceed the opposite way from aircraft: lay 69 down as the base, leave the darker tone in the hollows and carefully draw the raised edges out with a lighter gray on a dry brush. The result looks like material straight away, not like painted plastic.
