Arctic Blue is a metallic acrylic from Vallejo in a dropper bottle holding 17 ml. Unlike an ordinary opaque paint it contains metallic pigment flakes which, in the dried layer, align parallel to the surface and create a bright metallic sheen. The shade matches its name: a cool, arctic blue with a metallic cast, the kind that suits design and fantasy features, motorcycle and car accessories or striking accents on figures.
Metallic paints have their own rules. The metallic pigment is heavier than the binder and settles at the bottom, so shake the bottle markedly longer than you would an ordinary paint. The result stands or falls on the base - the smoother and glossier the layer under a metallic paint, the brighter the sheen; on a matte, roughened surface the paint goes gray. Metallic paints are also harder to spray over and harder to mask, because residual flakes readily transfer under masking tape, so as a rule apply them at the very end of the painting. With an airbrush, spray thin coats from a shorter distance so that the flakes settle evenly.
