A tool for large areas

The number four closes the range of round natural hair brushes from the top. Its hair takes up the largest dose of paint, which is useful everywhere the paint has to be laid quickly and in one piece: fuselages, wings, the cloaks of figures, bases or large vehicle parts. Speed is not an end in itself here but serves the look: the sooner an area is finished, the smaller the chance that the edges of the strokes begin to set up and ridges stay in the dried film.

What a dried area looks like

With sufficiently thinned paint and smooth guidance a coat dries to an even surface with no uneven stripes. That shows particularly well with glazes and translucent coats, where an interrupted stroke would leave a darker band. With thick paint taken up in too large an amount, on the contrary, there is a danger of the surplus being led into the hollows and filling the detail; the hair of this size really does hold a lot, so it is a good idea to wipe the paint against the edge of the palette before applying it.

When to reach elsewhere

For small markings, the eyes of figures or thin lines this size is not suitable, even though it holds a point. For work like that the smaller numbers in the range are there. Natural hair needs regular washing out and protection against the paint drying near the ferrule; if the paint stiffens there, the hair starts to spread and you will not get a clean wide stroke any more. Storing it point down or lying flat is more important at this size than with the small brushes, because the hair is longer and deforms more easily. Deformed hair will no longer manage a straight wide application, and on a finished model that tends to be noticed sooner than anything else.
