Gunze Mr.Color JASDF Deep Ocean Blue (semi-gloss) - a modeling lacquer, 10 ml

Gunze Mr.Color JASDF Deep Ocean Blue is the darker of the pair of blue shades that the Japanese maker Gunze (Mr.Hobby) created for the camouflage of the aircraft of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF). It is not an ordinary dark blue: it is the exact tone of a particular camouflage scheme.

Important about the chemistry: the Mr.Color line is a lacquer based on organic solvents, not an acrylic paint. It is thinned solely with Mr.Color Thinner or Leveling Thinner. Neither water nor acrylic thinner will thin it; the paint curdles and becomes unusable. The acrylic line from the same maker is called Aqueous and it is a different product.

The Japanese naval camouflage is a two-tone blue that imitates the color of the sea seen from above: the darker tone matches deep water, the lighter one the shallows. The two colors therefore belong together: without the lighter counterpart JASDF Shallow Ocean Blue from the same line you will not put the camouflage together.

Use

• The darker tone of the two-tone blue camouflage of JASDF aircraft; the lighter counterpart is JASDF Shallow Ocean Blue from the same line.
• It is thinned with Mr.Color lacquer thinner (Thinner or Leveling Thinner), not with water and not with acrylic thinner.
• Airbrush and brush alike; it dries fast and leaves a hard, durable film that takes the masking of another color well.
• Lacquer etches plastic: spray thinly on thin parts, and it is better not to paint clear canopies, as they can fog.
• A semi-gloss surface is the realistic look of a real aircraft: neither gloss nor deep matte.

On two-tone schemes the darker shade is usually sprayed second, over the masking of the lighter tone. Before decals it pays to lay a gloss coat under them locally: on a more matte base the edge of a decal silvers.

Who the paint is for

For modelers of Japanese jets who want the camouflage in the right shades, not in approximate ones. Suitable for an airbrush and for a brush; count on working with a lacquer paint and the matching thinner.

The paint is flammable and contains organic solvents. Work in a well-ventilated space and use a respirator with a filter for organic vapors, not just a cloth mask. Protect your eyes and skin and keep it out of the reach of children.
