Six acrylic shades for German vehicles in North Africa, including the dark gray in which the vehicles arrived on the continent.
Responsibility details are not available.
February 1941, the port of Tripoli: the first German units come ashore, and their vehicles still carry the European dark gray finish, which suited the desert about as well as a tuxedo suits a beach. So they were repainted on the spot and in a hurry, in sand and brown tones, which the African sun then shifted lighter by fading within a few weeks. The six shades in this set follow that sequence, the starting gray included.
What the palette contains: camouflage brown, German green-brown, camouflage gray-green, camouflage gray, medium olive and dark panzer gray. The two darker tones make it possible to build a vehicle shortly after the landing, while the lighter brown and gray-green shades suit machines after a longer spell of service.
The recommended procedure: lay down the darker base, let it dry and place the lighter tone unevenly over the horizontal surfaces the sun reached most. Leave the sides and the lower areas darker. Once dry, dust is added with pigment or a heavily thinned wash, but only at the very end, otherwise the differences are lost.
The set is smaller than the eight-bottle boxes of the same range: it holds six bottles instead of eight. The focus is narrow, though, and within the North African campaign it is a very well assembled selection.
Anyone building a desert scene will appreciate that the same tones turn up on tarpaulins, crates and camouflage nets. The finish of a vehicle and of its equipment rubbed into one another in Africa anyway, so a slight difference between them reads more naturally than a perfect match.
