A thicker sanding sponge 80 x 30 x 12 mm with two grits. Intended for large flat areas.
Responsibility details are not available.
The thicker body and the width of thirty millimeters make this piece a tool for large flat areas. Twelve millimeters of material sit comfortably in the whole palm, so you spread the pressure evenly and the side of a fuselage, a deck or the board of a base does not ripple. The slimmer sizes in the same family are aimed instead at cramped corners.
Both sides of the sponge carry abrasive of a different coarseness, so when leveling a joint you do not have to reach for a second tool. The coarser grade takes off the excess plastic and filler, the finer one levels the area around the worked spot and prepares the surface for the base coat.
Start with the coarser side, and as soon as the joint disappears, turn the piece over. Work crosswise, that is, alternate the direction of the strokes. That way you find a spot more easily where a hollow, or on the contrary a hump, still remains. The scratches left by the coarser grade have to be removed before you apply paint, because the primer will emphasize them mercilessly.
The piece stands up to working with water and to rinsing under the tap. That largely restores clogged abrasive and the tool lasts considerably longer than paper of comparable area. Always let it dry out completely and only then put it away with the rest of the tools.
When leveling larger filled spots, it helps to run a finger over the surface now and then with your eyes closed. Touch reveals unevenness sooner than sight, because on a single-color surface the eye does not see the transition. A second proven aid is a thin check coat of dark paint, which after sanding stays only in the hollows.
