About product

Vallejo Model Color German Grey RAL7016 - the German dark gray

German Grey RAL7016 is a modeling paint, not a kit. A water-thinnable acrylic from Vallejo out of the Model Color range: a thick, heavily pigmented paint meant mainly for the brush; for an airbrush it has to be thinned. A dropper bottle with a volume of 17 ml (for the newer formulation the manufacturer states 18 ml). The surface is flat once dry.

Why this shade matters to modelers

The German dark gray - known to modelers as panzergrau (Dunkelgrau) - was the base finish of German armored vehicles up to 1943. Only an order of February 1943 replaced it with dark yellow (Dunkelgelb) as the new standard, over which camouflage blotches were then applied. In practice this means: a model of an early German tank, assault gun or armored personnel carrier from the campaigns up to 1943 belongs in dark gray, not in yellow. German Grey is the shade most often reached for in that role.

Use

  • The base finish of German tanks, self-propelled guns and armored personnel carriers of the early period of the Second World War.
  • German trucks and off-road vehicles, tractors and artillery equipment of the same period.
  • Dark gray surfaces generally: chassis, technical parts, instruments - even outside German subjects.
  • A base for weathering: dust pigments, washes and dry shading of the edges all show beautifully on a flat dark gray.

Thinning and application

It thins with water or an acrylic thinner, and the brushes clean with water. On the large areas of the hull, lay on thin coats so that the engraving is not flooded. For an airbrush, thin it to the consistency of milk.

Who it is for

Above all for modelers of military vehicles focused on the German army of the early part of the war - and for anyone who needs a dark, slightly brownish gray with solid coverage.

A modeling acrylic paint. Ensure sufficient ventilation and protect your airways when spraying. Keep out of the reach of children.

FAQ

Vehicles up to 1943. The dark gray was the base finish of German armored vehicles right up to February 1943, when dark yellow replaced it as the new standard. A model of an early vehicle therefore belongs in gray, while later machines belong rather in yellow.

The Model Color range - a thick, heavily pigmented paint for the brush. For an airbrush, thin it with water or an acrylic thinner. Model Air is thinner and sprays straight from the bottle.

Black Grey is a black-gray - it is used as a substitute for pure black on shadows, chassis and tires. German Grey is lighter, with a slightly warmer character, and it is tied to the German armored subject as a full covering color for the hull.

A dark gray over a large area easily looks flat and dull if it is left without work. Lighten the upper surfaces, emphasize the edges with drybrushing and add a dark wash in the recesses and dust pigments on the running gear.
