Aqueous Hobby Color is a Japanese acrylic range that can be thinned with water and with the same maker's own thinner. Number 71 lies inside a continuous block that in this range covers the colors of the Royal Air Force: its immediate neighbors cover Dark Earth, Dark Green and Dark Sea Grey. It is therefore a muted camouflage tone intended for the upper surfaces of the airframe, not a saturated color for small details.
British machines of the turn of the 1930s and 1940s wore two-color upper patterns with softly sprayed transitions made using rubber templates. For the North African theater the green component was replaced by a lighter sandy tone, so the same layout of the pattern appeared over Egypt and over the English Channel alike. The boundaries of the fields were never entirely sharp, because workers sprayed them freehand over the masks laid in place.
The pigment in the bottle settles to the bottom, so the contents have to be stirred honestly for at least a minute before pick-up, ideally with a mixing ball. Into an airbrush the paint is thinned to roughly the thickness of milk and applied through a 0.3 mm nozzle at a pressure of around 1.5 bar. Several light passes with a short pause work well.
The dried coat takes a lacquer overcoat and enamel washes, which makes later emphasis of panel lines and rivets easier. Wipe the cap after work, otherwise it will dry onto the edge of the neck after a few openings.
