The code FS 34079 describes a dark green so saturated that on a large area it looks almost black. It forms part of the three-color scheme of American military vehicles together with brown and black and it also appears on aircraft with dark camouflage. On a model it is one of the shades that are hardest to work with, because they swallow light and detail.
The basis is a water-thinnable dispersion and the dried coat has a muted satin sheen. An absorbent surface tolerates thinning with water, but on plastic the maker's own thinner does a better job. Mixing with lacquer products is out of the question.
In the three-color scheme this shade is the darkest component and its share of the area tends to be smaller than modelers imagine. Before applying it, it pays to look at a period photograph, because the proportion of the colors differed from vehicle to vehicle.
On dark areas it pays to suggest the reflection of light that appears on a real vehicle. Without it a model merges into a single silhouette and loses the legibility of its shapes, which is the commonest problem with dark schemes.
