Mahogany is a dark tropical timber with a purple undertone, reached for by boat builders, furniture makers and the designers of the first aircraft alike. On a model you recognize it by the fact that where light falls on the surface it glows toward red, while in shadow it goes almost brown-black. It is precisely that changeability that makes the shade a rewarding base on which more can be built.
The propeller blades of machines from the First World War were turned from laminated wood, and without this tone you will not capture them faithfully. The decks and sides of wooden ship hulls, the stocks of small arms on figures and interior fittings on a diorama come out the same way. It also does interesting service as a dark base under metal shades, where covering it with a thin silver coat gives the metal warmth and depth.
Shake the container before picking the paint up, long enough for the settled pigment to disappear from the bottom. Apply it in thin coats rather than heavy ones, because a heavy deposit loses exactly the translucency for which the mahogany tone is used on wood. Then close an opened container carefully, as the acrylic binder sets in the neck when exposed to air and the cap gets stuck.
