Masking Tape FOR CURVES 3 mm from AK interactive belongs to a line that solves one specific problem: the curve. A classic masking tape is built for straight lines — the moment you try to follow a curve with it, it wrinkles, bunches up on the inside of the bend, and every fold becomes a small channel for paint to find its way under the mask. This tape, by contrast, is flexible and stretchy: on a curve it simply stretches, and the edge stays straight and adhered. Width 3 mm. This is a modeling aid, not a kit.
The line works on a simple rule: the narrower the tape, the tighter the curve it can handle. On a narrow strip, the difference in tension between the inner and outer edge of the curve is small, so the material settles without wrinkling. Three millimeters is therefore meant for gentler curves and wider curved bands — smooth camouflage boundaries, long rounded fuselage demarcations, larger circles. It covers more area at once and saves you a second parallel line. For really tight radii — cockpit frames, small round and oval elements — the 2 mm variant of the same line is better suited.
Beyond flexibility, everything that makes a modeling tape a modeling tape still applies. Tack is low and controlled — the tape holds, but will not pull off paint or a primer when removed. The edge is sharply cut, adheres along its whole length, and does not let paint creep under. And after removal no adhesive remains; the manufacturer explicitly states a residue-free adhesive for this line, gentle even on fine finishes. Ordinary tape from a hardware store meets none of that.
Stretch the tape into the curve; do not force it into shape — guide it under gentle tension and apply it gradually. Then press the edge down with a toothpick or the blunt side of a knife, especially on the inside of the curve. Apply the paint in thin coats, working from the mask outward into the area. Remove it slowly and at a sharp angle, back over itself — pulling perpendicular is the fastest way to lift the paint. The ends can be trimmed with scissors or a hobby knife.
For modelers who spray schemes with rounded transitions and want them free of paint creeping underneath and of unnaturally sharp broken edges. Three millimeters is the practical working width of this line — narrow enough for a curve, wide enough to protect a decent strip of area on its own.
A modeling aid. Store it dry and out of direct sunlight; paints, glue and other accessories are not included in the package.
