The shade imitates lighter wood tuned toward yellow. On models it will serve for the wooden decks of ships, for the propeller blades of wartime aircraft, for the stocks of small arms and for crates, barrels and benches in a diorama. At the same time it tends to be the starting tone for the technique that puts wood grain onto plastic.
The procedure is simple. Apply a continuous coat of this shade and let it cure completely. Then pull a darker oil paint or a dark wash over it and, while it is still wet, run a brush with stiffer bristles along the length of the plank. Irregular streaks resembling grain appear, with the lighter undercoat showing between them. You control the strength of the effect by how much of the dark paint you wipe off.
A lacquer type based on organic solvents in a ten-milliliter glass bottle. It dries quickly and forms a thin, durable film that will take further coats without the finish beneath dissolving, provided those coats are in a different type of medium.
An airbrush is recommended. Use the product of the same brand for thinning and choose the ratio according to the consistency of the paint. For brush work, a retarder is mixed into the paint, about a quarter of the volume, so that the brush stroke has time to blend with its surroundings before it dries.
A deck plank, a propeller blade and a gun stock each look different and each age differently. So the tone is rarely used on its own: lighter areas are tuned with an addition of sand, and darker wood is shifted by reddish brown. It is precisely the small differences between neighboring planks that make a deck come alive.
