About product

Vallejo Model Color Oily Steel — a dark acrylic metallic (17 ml)

Oily Steel is a metallic shade from the Model Color range from Vallejo. It is a water-thinnable acrylic — thinned with water or acrylic thinner, never with cellulose thinner. The Model Color range has a thicker consistency and is intended above all for the brush; it can be applied with an airbrush, but only after thinning. That is how it differs from the Model Air range, which can be sprayed straight from the bottle without thinning. The paint comes in a 17 ml dropper bottle. It is not a kit but a modeling paint.

What oily steel means and why it is not interchangeable with Natural Steel

The name of the shade is descriptive and points to a particular phenomenon. Oily Steel is darker than Natural Steel, goes toward blue-gray and carries a hint of an oil film — it imitates metal that works, gets greasy and is never polished. That is exactly why it is the typical color for tank tracks, mechanical parts, engines, gearboxes and weapon breeches. Natural Steel, by contrast, is cleaner and lighter — it belongs on cutting edges, tools, barrels and polished surfaces. Anyone building vehicles usually reaches for both: Oily Steel for the running gear and the mechanics, Natural Steel for worn edges and polished corners. The lightest of the three is Silver.

Use

  • Tank tracks and running gear — a base under washes and pigments
  • Engines, gearboxes, shafts and mechanical parts
  • Breeches, locks and moving parts of weapons
  • Worn places on edges (chipping)
  • Darkening brighter metallics when mixing

Tips for applying a metallic

Metallic pigment is heavier than the binder and while standing it sinks to the bottom of the bottle. With dropper bottles this is especially tricky, because settled pigment will not come out of them on its own — shake the bottle properly before every use, for longer than seems necessary. Metallics come out better on a smooth, glossy base; on a rough matte one they look duller. At the same time they are hard to spray over and do not take masking tape — the tape likes to pull them off when peeled. So put them at the end of the painting procedure.

Who the paint is for

Above all for modelers of military vehicles, diorama builders and figure painters who want to distinguish greasy mechanics from polished metal. An acrylic with a low smell is suitable for building indoors too.

When spraying with an airbrush, ensure sufficient ventilation and protect your airways with a respirator. Keep out of reach of children.

FAQ

Oily Steel is darker, toward blue-gray, with a hint of an oil film — it imitates greasy metal in service, that is tank tracks, engines and mechanics. Natural Steel is cleaner and lighter, for cutting edges, tools, barrels and polished surfaces. Both usually find a use on one model.

Yes, that is one of its typical uses. It works well as a metal base into which brown washes then run and dust pigments settle. The polished faces of the tracks can be suggested at the end with a lighter steel.

No. Model Color is a thicker range developed for the brush — before spraying you have to thin it with water or acrylic thinner. Paint ready to spray without thinning is rather what the Model Air range offers.

Most often for two reasons: either it was not stirred enough and the metallic pigment stayed at the bottom of the bottle, or there is a rough matte base under it. Metallics come out on a smooth, glossy surface.
