Plugs for the wheel bays cover the open bays while a model is being sprayed. They are shaped to match the bay, so they are simply set into the opening, fill it and do not let paint get inside. This set is cut for the MiG-17F model from the Kinetic kit in 1:48 scale.
Sealing a wheel bay with tape means cutting small pieces, pressing them into corners and still painting in by brush afterwards wherever paint has crept under. A shaped plug does the same in a few seconds and the edge of the bay rim stays sharp. It saves the nerves above all on aircraft where the bays are large and broken up.
Paint the inside of the bay first and let it dry properly. Only then set the plug in, and do so before spraying the outer coat, not after it. Do not push it in by force, as the fine lines and struts in a bay break easily; if it will not go in, trim it slightly instead. Take it out with tweezers after spraying, ideally as soon as the paint has set, so that the edge does not tear. Repeat the whole procedure before clear coating.
The MiG-17 was a Soviet subsonic fighter that followed on from the earlier MiG-15 and differed from it mainly in a wing with a greater sweep angle. The F form is among the more widespread ones and received an engine with an afterburner. The wheel bays of the MiG-17 are clearly visible from below and from the side, so a sharp edge between the inside of the bay and the color of the model's underside is worth the extra moment of work.
For anyone who builds the MiG-17F from Kinetic and does not want to spend an evening masking the bays. It also helps when you spray a model in several sessions and have to cover the bays repeatedly.
