Eight finished pieces with pronounced cuts recall rock broken along its fissures. The longer side measures 8.9 to 19 cm and the height 5.1 to 10.2 cm, so one package holds small stones as well as large blocks. Every piece is cast from plaster and finished by hand, so a repeating pattern is not a risk.
Deep cuts come off where the rock is meant to be freshly exposed: in a cut through a railroad formation, on the walls of a canyon, in an exposure above a road or in an abandoned quarry. The smaller pieces serve as boulders fallen below a wall, the largest as the dominant element of a scene.
The differing size of the pieces can be used as a vertical layering of a scene. The largest block forms the head of the exposure, the medium pieces carry on down the slope and the smallest are scattered at the foot like freshly fallen rubble. The wall then does not read as a single slab glued to the backdrop.
A block is first laid on the finished base and drawn around, then a bed is formed in the terrain and the piece is set into it, so that it does not look stuck on the surface. The transition to the surroundings is evened out with plaster slurry or modeling compound applied in a thin layer and spread with a brush while still damp. A subsequent dusting with pigment in the shade of the surrounding soil then ties the rock to the scene for good.
