Flat Type Grinding Plate Set is a set of U-STAR flat sanding plates for work on the flat surfaces of a model — where the surface should stay genuinely flat and an edge sharp.
Responsibility details are not available.
A set of sanding plates with a flat working face from the U-STAR tool range. The designation flat type in the name describes the essence of the tool: the working face is flat and rigid, so when sanding it follows itself rather than the shape of your hand.
The sides of a fuselage, the upper surface of a wing, the sides of a hull or a deck are large continuous surfaces in scale. As soon as they are sanded with loose paper held between the fingers, a shallow wave appears which you cannot see looking from above — but a gloss clear coat will show it at once, because the reflection in it is distorted. A flat sanding plate spreads the pressure over its whole face, so it takes material off evenly and the surface stays planar. The same principle holds for edges: paper rounds them off, a rigid plate keeps them sharp.
Work in long strokes across the whole surface and change direction by roughly a right angle between passes. Crossed strokes reveal the places that have not yet been touched, because they stay unchanged in sheen. Keep the pressure as light as possible and rather add strokes — the plate works by itself, and with pressure you only set yourself up for a hollow. On the joint of two parts, always sand so that the stroke runs across the gap, otherwise the gap deepens instead of disappearing. Once the surface is flat, move on to a finer finish, which levels the remaining marks before the paint is sprayed on.
