This is not a part for a model, but a workshop aid for casting. The guide pins ensure that the two halves of a two-part silicone mold always sit together in the same position. Before the second half is cast, they are pressed into the surface of the first half, so that once it has cured there is a projection on one side and an exactly matching recess on the other. The mold can then be taken apart and put back together freely with no risk of the halves shifting against each other.
A shift of the mold halves is the most common fault in home casting. On the casting it shows up as a step on the parting line, which then has to be laboriously sanded, and on small parts the result tends to be unusable outright. The pins solve this fault systematically. Size S is the smaller variant, intended for molds of a small plan and for casting small parts, where a larger pin would needlessly weaken the wall of the mold.
Place the pins asymmetrically, so that the mold cannot be put together the wrong way round. Before casting the second half, apply a mold release agent to the cured first half and to the pins, otherwise the two layers of silicone will grow into a single piece. Keep a sensible distance between the pin and both the part being cast and the edge of the mold. For larger molds and bulkier castings reach for the variant in size L.
The silicone compound, the resin and the mold release agent are not included in the package.
