A saturated yellow tone with an orange undertone belongs where the color is to call brass, amber or the border of a cloak to mind: coats of arms, stripes on hulls, the ornaments of armor and flames on figure bases. The shade lies between a pure primary yellow and ocher, so it can serve as a transitional layer between them without the result turning gray.
The maker AMMO of Mig Jimenez built this collection around the painting of figures and of tabletop games. The paints are acrylic, they thin with water and their consistency is closer to cream than to milk, which helps with yellow pigments. Yellow is of all colors the most translucent and over a dark surface it easily turns into a greenish veil.
Over a dark base it pays to lay a thin coat of a light or sand tone underneath and only then to apply the yellow itself. It then covers in two coats instead of five and keeps its ring. Brown or red is mixed in for the shadows, bone for the highlights. Thinning with plain water works, but for thin glazes an acrylic thinner is safer, otherwise the binder is disturbed and the pigment clumps into blotches.
The shade stands out most strongly beside a deep blue or violet; beside orange, on the contrary, it merges and stops reading. On metal parts it serves as a glaze over silver, which gives the impression of polished brass without using a metallic pigment. On a cloak or a banner it makes a good middle tone into which highlights and shadows are then worked without the cloth losing its warmth.
