Kikina

Kikina hand-launched glider (Pelikan)

Kikina is a hand-launched glider, that is, a small glider that is released by hand and then flies on by itself. It has no motor, no battery and no radio control, and to fly it needs nothing but open space and calmer air. It is a classic kind of item that stands up to plenty of afternoon flights and calls for no preparation. The span, the material and the exact contents of the package are given on the packaging.

How the glider flies

The whole flight is decided by two things: the balance of the model and the way it is thrown. The glider is released at an upward angle, and once it has used up its speed it goes over into a gliding descent and sinks steadily toward the ground. When the model drops onto its nose, the center of gravity is usually too far forward; when it instead climbs steeply after the throw and then stalls, the center of gravity is too far back. It can be tuned in small steps and the difference shows at once. Hand-launched gliders fly best in still air, typically early in the morning or toward evening.

Flying and maintenance tips

• Choose an open space free of trees, wires and parked cars
• Start with a gentler throw on the level and add force and bank only as the model behaves
• In wind, throw into the wind; the model then comes back closer to the launch point
• Always change the setup in small steps and make a test throw after every change
• After a harder landing, check the leading edges and the joints; use a glue suitable for the material of the model for repairs

Who the glider is for

It is an undemanding choice for children under adult supervision, for family outings and for adults who just want to fly a little without getting equipment ready. It also serves well as a first step toward model flying, because a hand-launched glider shows nicely how balance and the setting of the lifting surfaces shape the behavior of an aircraft.

This is a flying model, not a collector's plastic model. Check the dimensions, the material, the degree of assembly and the recommended age against the details on the packaging.
