A rich dark blue in a matte finish from the Italian Lifecolor range, in a bottle of twenty-two milliliters. The paint is acrylic, thins with water or with the brand's own thinner and is applied with a brush as well as an airbrush. The shade corresponds to the number FS 35044 of the American standard. The manufacturer also gives other names in common use for it, among them US Navy blue, Oxford blue and insignia blue, which is a useful pointer, because the same tone is named a little differently every time in the literature.
Shake the bottle thoroughly before use, as the pigment settles to the bottom. For a brush the paint is used practically as it is; for an airbrush, thin it to the consistency of milk. Dark rich blue shades generally cover less well than light colors, so reckon on two or three thin coats, and preferably over a light base. One heavy coat would flood the engraved lines and the surface would stay uneven. Before laying decals, go over the area with gloss varnish, as white patches would form under a decal on a matte surface.
